Do not confuse a mesh conversion with original design history

STL stores a faceted mesh, not the original parameters, modules, or feature tree. PurCad's SCAD workspace does not claim STEP export.

Request the right source

Ask for the original CAD or SCAD source when future controlled edits are likely. STEP can carry editable solid geometry in other CAD tools, but converting an STL does not restore the original construction intent.

Choose reconstruction deliberately

For a simple interface, remodel from measurements and document assumptions. For a complex mesh, conversion may leave facets or unreliable faces; assess the result in the target CAD system before using it.

Choose an editable source, not only a file extension

Questions this page answers

Does converting STL to STEP restore the original parameters?

No. A conversion cannot recreate original variables, modules, or feature history from a mesh.

Can I get a smooth editable solid from a faceted mesh?

Sometimes other CAD workflows can reconstruct or approximate one, but the result needs inspection and does not prove it matches the original design.

Does PurCad's SCAD workspace export STEP?

No STEP export is claimed for the SCAD workspace. Keep the SCAD source and successful STL build for this workflow.

Which file should I request if I need to change dimensions later?

Request the original editable source, such as the source CAD project or SCAD, and keep the build output alongside it.
