Workflow

Export CAD as OBJ for mesh tools and visualization

Export the selected PurCad model as an OBJ mesh when a renderer or mesh tool requires it. Check scale and geometry after import; keep the source project or a STEP file when the next task requires solid CAD rather than triangles.

Export OBJ for a mesh or visualization destination

  • Name the receiving renderer or mesh tool and its expected units and material handling.
  • Select a checked CAD version and compare its overall bounds after import.
  • Keep STEP or source CAD available when the recipient needs mechanical edits.

Choose OBJ for a named downstream requirement

Use OBJ when a renderer, mesh editor or exchange partner asks for it. For mechanical CAD use STEP; for common printing use STL or 3MF. Format choice should follow the next tool rather than a belief that one file fits every workflow.

Generate the mesh from checked geometry

Resolve blocking validation issues, select the intended project version and request OBJ from Download. If several formats are needed, prepare them together so every recipient gets geometry from the same version.

Check scale and topology after import

Open the OBJ in the target mesh tool and compare overall bounds with PurCad. Confirm object count, normals and visible openings. OBJ consumers differ in their interpretation of units and materials, so inspect the actual handoff.

OBJ does not carry parametric intent

An OBJ mesh cannot replace the project parameter model or validation record. Make dimensional revisions in PurCad and regenerate the file rather than editing production dimensions indirectly through mesh vertices.

Practical questions

When should I use OBJ instead of STL?

Use OBJ when a visualization or mesh tool explicitly requests it. For common printing, STL or 3MF is more typical; for mechanical CAD handoff, STEP carries solid geometry better.

Does OBJ preserve parametric CAD features?

No. OBJ is a mesh exchange format and does not retain the project’s editable parameter model. Change production dimensions upstream in CAD and regenerate the mesh.
